Two 7-Eleven stores in Winnipeg recently closed and were boarded up on January 24. While the exact reasons for the closures are unclear, 7-Eleven’s parent company, Seven & I Holdings, had previously raised concerns about employee safety and rising crime with Winnipeg’s city council, as well as plans to close underperforming stores. Despite these closures, Seven & I Holdings plans to expand by opening 500 new stores in the U.S. and Canada in 2027.

A 7-Eleven on Winnipeg’s Ness Avenue has become the first Manitoba location where people can buy and consume liquor. The store has been remodelled to include a dining area, and staff have received certification to serve alcohol.

Princess Auto, a retailer with 50 locations across Canada, is planning to build a 105,000-sq.-ft. superstore in Winnipeg. The project will be located in the Elmwood area, but still requires a final vote by City Council before it can get underway.

Four clothing retailers have closed their Winnipeg shops over the past year, citing the high cost of maintaining brick-and-mortar stores. Downtown menswear stores Hobbyism, Cntrbnd, and Livestock Winnipeg have closed up shop, as has Style Bar, a women's boutique in Osborne Village. Some will continue to sell clothing online.

D’Arcy’s ARC Thrift Store, located on Winnipeg’s Main Street, has permanently closed after 16 years in business. The store, which funds an animal rescue centre, has dealt with rising costs, shoplifting, and safety concerns in recent years.
