École La Grande-ourse, a K-7 French school in Smithers, recently opened their new permanent facility in February 2025. The $5M prefabricated, five-unit school and a gymnasium was funded by the province through the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique.
The provincial government, the City of North Vancouver, along with the local school district, are providing a combined $67.5 million to construct a new elementary school in North Vancouver's Cloverley neighbourhood. The new school is expected to be ready by fall 2026 and will include a neighbourhood learning centre for childcare programs and services.
The federal and provincial governments are providing $800,000 to create a new childcare centre in Cawston. The childcare centre can accommodate 24 children during daytime and 30 children before and after school hours. The centre is expected to be available by September.
School District 60, located in Fort St. John, is looking to hire more teaching staff going into the 2024 school year. Staff shortages have persisted throughout Northern B.C. for more than 10 years. A new childcare centre recently opened in Kamloops. The Twin Rivers Learning Centre is located at the former site of Happyvale Elementary school and offers 72 spaces for children up to age five.
The provincial government is continuing to provide the Everyone Rides Grade 4-5 program to provide safe-cycling education and awareness for children. The program's expansion to Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Powell River, and Campbell River, is expected to provide 15,000 students in 40 municipalities with bicycle safety training.
