CLASSIFICATION: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPNA) ? Eye Bank Technician for the New Brunswick Organ and Tissue Donation Program ? Ocular DivisionSTATUS : CasualHOURS OF WORK: On-call duty for donor screening and retrievals of corneas and other tissues, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. Hour of work may vary as per operational requirements.JOB SUMMARY:As a member of the New Brunswick Organ and Tissue Donation Program ? Ocular Division, the technician will have the opportunity to respond to the request of patients who wish to donate cornea or other tissues. This person will communicate with bereaved families, members of the health care staff, multidisciplinary organizations and the staff of the tissue and ocular divisions of the New Brunswick Organ and Tissue Donation Program. Successful candidates must be willing to take a five-day orientation and training session, offered by the ocular division of the New Brunswick Organ and Tissue Donation Program, and to keep their skills up to date for the eye bank by attending an annual session. The technician will have to assess potential donors, perform physical exams and carry out cornea retrievals. Once trained, the technician will be responsible for obtaining consent for cornea donation and conducting a donor eligibility assessment with their next of kin. Once trained, staff members must work independently in various complex and sometimes demanding situations.REQUIREMENTS:Member in good standing of the ANBLPN as a licensed practical nurse;Ability to work on short notice and overtime, as needed;Physical ability to lift and move potentially heavy stretchers, patients and equipment;Competencies in asepsis techniques and manual dexterity necessary to carry out cornea retrievals;Initiative, good judgment and ability to resolve problems independently;Ability to travel to carry out retrievals;Personal qualities or skills required in the following areas: collaboration, communication, interpersonal relations, work planning and setting priorities, analytical reasoning, attention to detail, decision-making;Ability to work independently and as a team member;Physical ability to perform assigned duties;Good previous work history (performance and attendance);Adherence to professional ethics principles, to the Network management philosophy and organizational values;Compliance with the rules of confidentiality established by the Vitalité Health Network.Written and spoken competence in English and French is required.
