*Job Summary*
The overall role of the First Cook is to prepare a quality meal service based on the requirements of the day-to-day menu for hostel clients. The First Cook ensures work areas are clean and sanitary, maintains proper handling of all inventories, including proper storage, rotation, covering, labeling, and dating. First Cooks work on a rotational schedule of 14 days on/ 14 days off.
*Responsibilities*
* Ensure all menu items are prepared and served according to contract and;
* Ensure that the presentation of all menu items adhere to established standards
* Ensure quality and safety of food by cleaning of surfaces, as well as proper covering and storage of food items
* Ensure that the correct quantities are prepared to meet daily needs
* Complete all required documentation
* Duties also include pot and dishwashing
* Ensure all required health and safety regulations and procedures are being followed, including relevant provincial and federal legislation and Food Safe and HACCP standards
* Inspect equipment and communicate need of repair equipment (i.e. malfunctioning and/or damaged), ensuring the equipment is safe for use, and if not, that the equipment is properly locked out and secured until repaired
* Must adhere to organizational policies and procedures concerning cleaning, hand hygiene and the use of Personal Protective Equipment in support of Infection Control measures and attend training when necessary
* Other duties as required
*Skills*
* Red Seal or other certifications is an asset
* Applicants must have a current Food Safe certificate
* Be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
* Must have knowledge/training of food production equipment.
* Must be able to stand for long periods (12-hour shifts).
* Must be able to handle and work around heated equipment.
* Accuracy and speed in executing assigned tasks
* Ability to work well in a team environment
* Good communication skills
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $27.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 42 per week
Education:
* Secondary School (preferred)
Experience:
* Cooking: 1 year (preferred)
Language:
* English (preferred)
Licence/Certification:
* Food Handler Certification (preferred)
* Food Safe, SafeCheck, Food Handler or equivalent (preferred)
