Job Description: Excavator Operator
Position Title: Excavator Operator
Department:Construction/Operations /Civil
Reports To: Site Supervisor/Foreman
Location: Yard in Shawnigan - Work in Victoria
Employment Type:Full-Time
Overview:
The Excavator Operator is responsible for operating heavy machinery, specifically excavators, to safely and efficiently perform excavation and earth-moving tasks on construction sites. The operator will be expected to work in various conditions and terrains, ensuring that tasks are completed according to the project specifications, safety standards, and in a timely manner.
Key Responsibilities:
Excavator Operation:
- Safely operate excavators to dig trenches, load/unload materials, and perform site grading or other related tasks.
- Maneuver the excavator in tight spaces and difficult terrains while avoiding obstacles and ensuring precision in excavation work.
- Conduct pre-operation and post-operation checks, ensuring the equipment is in proper working condition.
Project Execution:
- Follow project plans, blueprints, or site layouts to execute excavation tasks as directed by the Site Supervisor.
- Ensure that excavation depths, widths, and slopes meet project requirements.
- Assist in clearing land, demolishing structures, and preparing the ground for construction or development.
Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure, hydraulic systems, and keeping the machine clean and in good working condition.
- Report any mechanical issues, malfunctions, or necessary repairs to the supervisor or maintenance team.
Safety & Compliance:
- Follow all company safety protocols and regulatory guidelines (e.g., OSHA) to minimize risks and hazards on the worksite.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure that all safety features of the excavator are functional.
- Keep the worksite hazard-free by staying alert to surrounding equipment, personnel, and conditions.
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with other equipment operators, site supervisors, and laborers to coordinate excavation and construction activities.
- Provide support to other team members as needed, including helping with equipment positioning, securing loads, and other general labor duties.
Skills & Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid excavator operator certification or license.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience operating an excavator in construction or related industries.
- Strong understanding of heavy machinery operation and maintenance.
- Familiarity with excavation techniques and knowledge of soil types and excavation best practices.
- Ability to read blueprints and site layouts.
- Knowledge of safety standards and regulatory requirements in construction.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating machinery.
- Perform manual labor, including lifting heavy materials (up to [X] lbs).
- Work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail for operating controls.
