We are a mid-size law firm with offices in Nanaimo and downtown Victoria, presently consisting of ten lawyers and four paralegals, and we have an immediate opening for a qualified legal assistant (3+ years of experience) to train as a paralegal in our Victoria office*.* The firm?s sole area of practice is the conduct of Federal prosecutions, so experience in criminal and or regulatory prosecution, or defence work in either field, would be extremely beneficial. The following criteria are essential:
- Ability to work in MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat
- Ability to conduct on-line research, and familiarity with email communication
- Strong communication skills both written and oral
- Ability to learn new programs quickly (JUSTIN and iCase)
- Ability to multi-task and work independently in a high paced environment
*Job Description:*
\* Receive and review Reports to Crown Counsel, prepare file for charge approval including reviewing for PPT charges and expert opinions, as well as Search Warrant Unsealing Orders if necessary,
\* Communication, both written and oral with RCMP regarding charge approval and Crown Counsel follow-up queries.
\* Justin data entry, iCase data entry, drafting Informations and Indictments, witness notifications, review and prepare Seized Property Management Act requests for Management Orders.
\* Review file and prepare for Court including the preparation of disclosure, conducting Arraignment Hearing file reviews, Pre-trial Conference reviews, preparation of Canada Evidence Act and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Notices, Books of Authorities, and Applications for Court and drafting Court Orders.
\* Communications both written and oral with Defence Counsel, Court Registries, Probation, Public Prosecutions Service of Canada, and other various Federal Government Agencies regarding court dates, disclosure, and Court Orders.
\* Maintain the office calendar including trial schedules, witness scheduling, and maintaining a bring-forward calendar.
The successful candidate should also be aware that they will also be photocopying / faxing / scanning and assisting on the switchboard.
The job is full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 with an hour off for lunch.
Medical and dental benefits start after 90 days of employment.
Due to the nature of the firm's work, security clearance will be required prior to job commencement.
Salary is $55,000 to $60,000 per year (depending on experience) *plus a generous bonus structure*, a probation period, 4 weeks holidays (20 days per calendar year), and 6 sick days per calendar year.
